The Serene Beauty of Cilento: A PAINTERS’ PARADISE
Lucinda Stephens will be conducting a week’s visit for painters in all mediums

The Cilento National Park is an area of outstanding beauty rarely visited by tourists due to its inaccessibility. Lucinda Stephens will be conducting a week’s visit for painters in all mediums. Once a professional dancer Lucinda studied art at Putney School of Art & Design, the Guildhall and the Royal Academy Drawing School. She has won a number of awards including the Princess Michael of Kent watercolour award. She is an enthusiastic and energetic instructor who will bring these qualities to create a lively tour.

We will meet British Airways flight BA2606 which departs from London Gatwick at 8 am on 16 May, arriving at Naples airport at 11.45 am.

The visit will be centred in a hotel called Kings Residence, a lovely hotel set among lush gardens and standing high on a hill just outside Palinuro about two hours drive south of Naples. The hotel has an atmosphere of peace and serenity and enjoys beautiful views over the sea which can be reached by descending 400 steps to a small attractive beach. Many subjects for painting could be created from the hotel alone.

The Cilento National Park extends from Paestum in the north to Sapri in the south. The park is mainly wild with beautiful countryside, rich in fauna and wildlife with mountains, valleys and a host of small medieval villages clinging to hilltops. The coast is beautiful and dramatic with a clear unpolluted sea.

Paestum in the north is one of Italy’s most important archeological sites with three well preserved Greek temples which glow a warm red at sunset, a lovely subject for painting. We will visit Paestum on our way from Naples airport to Palinuro. Other places we can visit are Velia, previously called Elea, a Greek city founded in the 6C BC by Phocaean colonists. It became a leading intellectual centre in the Eleatic School of Philosophy. The city also boasts the only known Greek arch.

One of the medieval towns is Roccagloriosa, dramatically perched high on a hill with extensive views over the Cilento and further south is the picturesque seaside resort of Policastro. On the eastern edge of the Cilento is a magnificent Carthusian monastery – well worth a visit!
